Why Managing Neck & Shoulder Tension is So Important to Increasing Your Energy

July 24, 20232 min read

If you're someone who has tension in your neck and shoulders AND you're always tired, this post is for you.

You don't need me to tell you that it's uncomfortable, maybe even painful to have that tension in your neck and shoulder muscles. But you may not have realised how draining that discomfort is on your energy levels. Discomfort is usually a signal from the body to the brain to let it know that something needs attention. If you don't attend to whatever it is (bad posture? stress?), the discomfort continues and your brain needs to spend energy to ignore the it. Remove the cause of your tension and let your brain rest. That not only frees up energy in your physical brain, it'll increase your mental energy too.

Another way tension saps your energy is the physiology of it. Simply put, tensing your muscles takes energy. Tensing for too long and the result is your muscles will "forget" how to release and relax. It follows that if you ease the tension, your muscles won't be constantly draining your energy and you'll have more for doing other things. Physical activity (any kind of movement, including gentle stretching) and massages are great for releasing muscle tension.

A third way tension drains your energy is by disrupting your sleep. The discomfort of neck and shoulder tension can affect the quality of your sleep, leading to tiredness during the day. Reducing muscle tension should reduce the chances of it waking you up during the night or affecting how soundly you sleep. You should wake up refreshed and energised.

Tension in your neck and shoulder muscles is a sign that something in your life is out of balance and needs your attention. Ignoring it is actually tiring. Reducing that tension by dealing with the cause of it should go a long way towards increasing your energy levels.
